Testing the New iPhone 14 Pro
This article covers my experience testing the new iPhone 14 Pro. Read on to learn more about Dynamic Island, the Always-on display, and the battery life. Also, I’ve included some tips and tricks for using the phone. Hopefully, this will help you decide if this is the right phone for you.
iPhone 14 Pro
The iPhone 14 Pro features an always-on display, but this can negatively impact battery life. Fortunately, there are ways to disable this feature. In the display settings, you can toggle whether the screen is on all the time. You can also turn the screen off by setting your phone face down. This will temporarily silence notifications and phone calls.
Apple also built the iPhone 14 with a more power-efficient A16 Bionic chip, which consumes less power. It also includes an LTPO OLED display that can be dialed down to a single hertz. The company claims that the device will last up to an hour longer when playing videos.
Dynamic Island
Dynamic Island is one of Apple’s most intriguing new features. It’s like having a news ticker that updates you as you go about your daily routine on your iPhone. It is exclusive to the 14 Pro model lineup and is expected to be carried over to future iPhone models. It will allow you to see information as you’re doing things on your phone, such as checking your message inbox or responding to an AirDrop request.
The Dynamic Island will appear on the home screen after you unlock the phone. You can swipe, tap, or long-press it to reveal different functions. For example, when you have a call waiting on you, the Dynamic Island will show the name and picture of the caller. You can choose to accept or reject the call from the options available. It will also display information about the battery level.
Always-on display
The new iPhone 14 Pro comes with an Always-On display, which will help you stay connected to the world around you no matter where you are. While you may already be familiar with this feature in modern Android phones, it is new to the iPhone world. Apple is doing it differently than its competitors, though.
When you unlock your iPhone 14 pro using the Side button, the Always-On display will activate. This feature will automatically turn off when you place it face down, saving battery life. The Always-On display will show you a glanceable feed of information, similar to that of an Apple Watch. It will also keep its refresh rate to a low 1Hz, which means less drain on your battery. However, this feature is only available on the new iPhone Pro and Max, and will not be available to the standard iPhone 14. You’ll still be able to use the Guided Access trick to enable the feature.
Battery drain
We tested the new iPhone’s battery life in a series of tests. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Max were used with and without the Always-On display. We found that the battery life of the iPhone 14 Pro decreased by about six percent after eight hours, with the Always-On screen turned on. Audio playback was also reduced.
Apple’s “graceable” screen consumes the most color and brightness, but keeps the time and widget details visible without draining the battery. The always-on screen is also useful for locking the device while displaying the calendar, time, and photos. The display is never off and will adjust brightness based on ambient light.
